10G EPON

The industry's first EPON ONU System-on-Chip with support for triple-lambda WDM multiplexing of 10G, 2.5G and 1.25G EPONs.

10G EPON

To meet the needs of subscribers and carrier business models, real-world triple-play networks face the challenge of delivering an endlessly-varying combination of bursty compressed video, latency-sensitive VoIP calls, and Internet traffic. Additionally, carriers need to reduce CapEx and OpEx while expanding service coverage and performance to businesses, backhaul, and high-density multiple dwelling units (MDUs). Thus, 10G EPON provides an ideal upgrade path for Fiber-to-the-Basement/MDU applications – but it needs to coexist with other EPON services that may already be deployed or are used for other services.

Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) on the optical distribution network provides the means to carry all three network speeds (1.25/2.5/10Gbps) simultaneously:

1G, 2.5G, 10G EPON Co-Existence

Teknovus’ support of multiple LLIDs/ONU enables carriers to provision services with widely differing QoS and performance requirements – yet isolated from each other to avoid interference – provides guaranteed SLA performance under all loading conditions. For example, an MDU-ONU could support the following services to the building’s occupants:

  • HD-IPTV
  • VoIP
  • Data (Internet)
  • Cellular backhaul

High-capacity traffic management and shaping in the central office/head-end are required to satisfy these requirements – yet may add many thousands of dollars in CapEx for external traffic management equipment. Teknovus’ architecture integrates end-to-end QoS and traffic management from OLT to ONU for all links, enabling carriers to confidently deploy disruption-sensitive services such as cellular backhaul in networks that may also be carrying residential triple-play traffic:

EPON MDU Architecture

Teknovus’ 10G EPON evaluation board system (EVB) is compliant with the latest draft of the IEEE 802.3av 10G EPON standard. The EVB contains both OLT (central office) and ONU (customer premises) devices along with comprehensive development tools. A reference design is also available, which has already been used by system vendors to develop customized implementations of the OLT line card compatible with their existing chassis.

In addition to the IEEE 802.3av feature set, the 10G EPON EVB system supports triple-lambda wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) downstream operation at 1.25G, 2.5G and 10G simultaneously. This allows system vendors to do extensive testing of co-existence between 10G and currently deployed networks, which is of critical importance for carriers’ network upgrade plans. The 10G EVB system also supports the same value-added features that exist in Teknovus’ current-generation chips, such as: support for M-LLID, flexible Hardware-based DBA to ensure strict and accurate SLA (Service Level Agreement) enforcement, guaranteed service level isolation, and predictable fairness under heavy traffic loads.
