Teknovus and GW Technologies Forge Partnership to Establish EPON Chipset Interoperability
EPON technology leaders team to build an interoperable, multi-vendor market for telecom carriers
PETALUMA, Calif. – September 6, 2005 – Teknovus, the leading provider of Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) chipsets for the deployment of IPTV in broadband access networks, and GW Technologies, the leading Chinese manufacturer of EPON-based access network systems for business customer s today announced the launch of a technology partnership to demonstrate full EPON chipset interoperability between the products of the two companies. Both companies have developed solutions that strictly comply with the IEEE 802.3ah EPON specification, the industry checklist for interoperability among Telecom carriers, and this program will focus on mutual verification and testing of all aspects of the standard. Carriers worldwide are using EPON to provide consumers with IPTV-triple play services (television, data, and voice) and business customers with high-speed services such as TDM, video, and managed Ethernet.
The strong emphasis on standards compliance and interoperability is a pivotal component and growing trend in broadband access networks, according to Dr.Lowell Lamb, Marketing Vice President of Teknovus. “IEEE-compliant EPON now represents a large component of broadband access investment worldwide. Carriers and equipment manufacturers are demanding solutions that are interoperable, thereby enabling a diverse choice of suppliers and making possible faster and cost-effective roll-outs of access networks. Teknovus welcomes the customer push for verifiable standards compliance as evidence that the EPON market is moving into a mature, high-volume stage. Proprietary solutions, which are typical of the early stage of any new technology’s life cycle, will fade quickly as a standards-compliant, multi-vendor supply base takes root and grows. Together with GW Technologies, we are laying the foundation for what will be a thriving community of interoperable EPON component suppliers,” stated Dr. Lamb.
Mr. Sun Shu He, General Manager of GW Technologies, stated, “The fiber-to-the-customer market in China is rapidly developing. As a supplier of multi-service access products, we are succeeding in this market because we offer superior EPON technology and because we listen to the needs of our customers. Our customers are telling us two things about EPON. First, for EPON to achieve true mass-market deployment in China, the chipsets from the EPON suppliers must comply with the IEEE 802.3ah EPON specification for interoperability. Second, if a truly interoperable multi-vendor chipset supply base can be established, the FTTH market will be huge. Both GW Technologies and Teknovus have superior technologies that complement each other, and together we can help bring interoperability – a vital step in advancing FTTH networks – to this market.”
